Arrival in Kurmuk
Dear Friends and Loved Ones,
The rain is pattering on the tin roof here at Kurmuk. We arrived this morning in Kurmuk and are moved into our tukul. All our critical boxes are here, and our stuff is all organized.
Pastor Andrew Kena, the Mabaan Director for SIC (Sudan Interior Church) came on the flight with us. Also, we met some key coordinators with the NSCC (New Sudan Council of Churches).
All our flights were perfect and quite comfortable. We flew from Nairobi to Lokichoggio (big UN base in the middle of nowhere) in the Sam's Purse DC-3 expertly operated by AIM-air pilots. We stayed the night at what can only be described as a luxury tent camp. Literally we had a fully furnished room inside a big duck green canvas army tent, complete with an overhead light.
You unzip the door and step inside a big green box. There's a full bed with a desk and chair. There are electrical outlets in this tent! Unzip the back door, and you walk out into a rock-wall enclosed toilet and shower that are exposed to the sky. There is running water and a flush toilet. Still it was a tent. The stars overhead last night were amazing.
When the plane landed at Kurmuk, some guys came in a Massey-Ferguson tractor with a trailer and loaded all the base provisions including fuel drums and propane cylinders. Almost 50 people came out to see the plane. We shook hands and gave greetings in Arabic to almost everyone.
An official vehicle pulled up, and the Commander came over to say hello. We had heard he was tall and had seen pictures but were not prepared - he is actually 7ft tall.
The road to the town of Kurmuk is very, very muddy right now, but Brian expertly bounced us through the worst spots.
Ok, gotta run errands around town with Brian and meet some more folks. We are so happy to be here.
Love, your missionaries in Sudan,
Chris and Beverly
